Wang Yi Meets with Minister for Foreign Affairs Inia Seruiratu of Fiji

On June 11, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Minister for Foreign Affairs Inia Seruiratu of Fiji in Beijing.

Wang Yi said that Fiji is a trade and transport hub with a crucial position and influence in the Pacific island countries. The Chinese side attaches great importance to relations with Fiji and is glad to see positive and forward-looking development in Fiji's economy and society. Last year, both sides agreed to elevate bilateral relations to comprehensive strategic partnership, opening up a new chapter in bilateral cooperation. The Chinese side has always maintained that all countries are equal members in the international community regardless of size, and has always stood together with developing countries in its diplomatic practices, especially with small and medium-sized countries. We are ready to, together with the Fijian side, constantly enhance mutual trust, continue to firmly support each other on issues concerning respective core interests, strengthen the synergy of development strategies to jointly facilitate cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative in line with the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges including tourism, reinforce communication and coordination on issues such as climate change under multilateral mechanisms, and make joint efforts to safeguard free trade and multilateralism, so as to push bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership for constant and forward-looking development.

Wang Yi pointed out that the Chinese side highly values developing relations with Pacific island countries including Fiji and pursues no private interest or so-called "sphere of influence" in Pacific island countries. The Chinese side is ready to enhance communication and cooperation in various fields with the Fijian side and other Pacific island countries to achieve common development and prosperity.

Inia Seruiratu noted that China has all along been a close friend of Fiji, adding that bilateral relations have developed well since the establishment of diplomatic relations. The Fijian side resolutely adheres to the one-China policy and stands ready to strengthen exchanges of experience in state governance and administration. The Fijian side congratulates the Chinese side on successfully holding the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, and expresses its gratitude to the Chinese side for its long-term assistance. The Fijian side is willing to deepen all-round cooperation with the Chinese side to promote Fiji-China comprehensive strategic partnership to a higher level.
