Li Keqiang Holds Talks with Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi of Iraq

On the evening of September 23, 2019, Premier Li Keqiang held talks at the Great Hall of the People with Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi of Iraq, who was paying an official visit to China.

Li Keqiang said, both China and Iraq are ancient civilizations and enjoy a long history of friendly exchanges. Bilateral relations have maintained healthy and stable development since the establishment of the diplomatic relationship between the two countries. The Chinese side supports the Iraqi side's efforts to restore national security and stability, promote economic and social reconstruction, and improve people's livelihood. The Chinese side is ready to work with the Iraqi side to deepen political mutual trust, expand practical cooperation across the board, and enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges to promote China-Iraq strategic partnership for greater development.

Li Keqiang pointed out, the Chinese side is willing to actively participate in Iraq's reconstruction, maintain a long-term and stable energy partnership with Iraq, and expand cooperation in fields including capacity, manufacturing and agriculture to fuel the diversified development of the Iraqi economy and achieve mutual benefit and win-win results. The Chinese side stands ready to better dovetail the Belt and Road Initiative with the Iraq side's reconstruction plan, supports Chinese enterprises in actively taking part in Iraq's infrastructure construction and hopes that the Iraqi side will take tangible measures to guarantee the safety of the Chinese side's institutions and personnel in Iraq.

Adil Abdul-Mahdi said, the current Iraq-China relations are at their best. Iraq has experienced war and is rebuilding its homeland. China is a country that loves peace and advocates cooperation. The Iraqi side is willing to work with the Chinese side to enhance cooperation in such fields as economy and trade, infrastructure construction, energy and people-to-people and cultural exchanges to push for greater development of bilateral relations.

After the talks, Premier Li Keqiang and Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi witnessed the signing of multiple bilateral cooperation documents in such fields as economy, technology, finance, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges.

Prior to the talks, Li Keqiang held a welcome ceremony for Adil Abdul-Mahdi at the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People.

Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Liu Qibao, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Director of the National Development and Reform Commission He Lifeng and others were present at relevant activities.

On that afternoon, Adil Abdul-Mahdi went to the Tian'anmen Square to lay a wreath to the Monument to the People's Heroes.
